YouTube Phenom Sets the Denim Record Straight |
|
When he began posting what was on his mind on YouTube a scant three months ago, William Sledd of Paducah, Kentucky had no idea he’d capture the attention of over 700,000 viewers. "I honestly didn't expect that many people to like it," Sledd, 23, told WWD about his one-month old "Ask a Gay Man" series of opinions on all matters fashion-related. "I figured it would get a lot of views, but I didn't think they would fall in love with the 'Ask a Gay Man' setup." When he and a gal pal, Stephanie, took on the do’s & don’ts of denim – his popularity skyrocketed. The five-minute piece is both witty & wise, covering all the essentials, including why guys should really refrain from wearing chick jeans, to never, ever being seen in carpenter jeans "unless you’re a carpenter." Sledd also suggests that should the carrying of a hammer actually be necessary, then the fashionably-minded would-be carpenter transports it in a man bag (of course). "We tried to pick a subject that would cover an extremely large range of people," notes Sledd about the wildly popular episode which has boosted his subscriber base into the thousands (instead of mere hundreds), and pushed his channel to the position of the 11th most popular in the history of YouTube. "We were trying to appeal to the biggest market we could." |
