The Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, Arizona, is the perfect stop for anyone wanting a flavor of the old Route 66. The wigwams have always been a family business and it shows. Some of the original furniture is still there and everything is clean and well maintained.

Don't miss an opportunity to visit.

You know my motto about Wigwam motels - When you can sleep in a wigwam, you should sleep in a wigwam.

Shamrock Texas has one of the most amazing bits of preservation along 66 - the Tower Service Station and U Drop Inn Restaurant. The restoration project is just incredible. There is no restaurant now, but the structure is there, and houses the chamber of commerce, although catching them open is a struggle.

A few blocks away in a park, Shamrock boasts a piece of the blarney stone.

Route 66 went right through the middle of Needles, but what it's really famous for are the bridges that carried people across the Colorado river from 1916 onward.

You might assume the bridge you see is the later one, but you would be wrong. And it was saved only because of a rather non-romantic notion about gas pipelines.

Needles takes its name from the surrounding mountains.

Rod's Steakhouse has been serving customers since Aug. 23, 1946 - yes, they celebrated 60 years last week.

They're famous for sugar dipped charred meat and also for their die cut menus featuring their mascot, Domino.

The Jack Rabbit Trading Post in Joseph City, Arizona is a Route 66 mainstay.

It became famous because its founder was a great marketer who teamed up with another business man to plaster billboards for 1000 miles along Route 66.

So, when you see the hopping bunny and the bright yellow sign saying, Here It Is, you know you've arrived.
